Some great hits today, very solid contact, good distance, straight, high flight off 5-iron. No issues with right arm. Even on chips, use pure passive left arm driver by rotatiion on downsw

Golf swing 2010

Ok, here are my latest insights into the swing:

Must keep left wrist not cupped ever and right one cupped all the time. Very important to keep club parallell to target line at the top of the backswing and enable dropping down on initiating of backswing (see Ben Hogan video)

Start backswing with right arm makes getting set up properly on the top of the backswing easier than with one piece take away, and can be used to introduce the feeling UP with right arm, DOWN with left arm

Elbows point to hips at address

Start downswing from hips rotating then shoulders then left arm. Left arm is essentially passive and is moved by rotating the shoulders. Left arm is across chest with hands just above or on right shoulder. When the left arm freewheels towards impact, it pulls the lagging club via the left hand, as if you were pulling a piece of rope. Only works with right wrist cupped all the time

Start of the season - 2010

Bit of trouble with the right elbow, probably from using the arms too much - make sure to turn the hips first, and let the arms follow, almost hold them back a bit to get a connect with the hip and shoulder turn, works wonders. Much better contact as well.

Return of the trigger finger

Trigger finger - works well for pitching with sw, introduce a bit of it in longer clubs as well. Stay well inside, easy swing, no power attempts. Early hinge with right wrist.

Lesson April 2009 Jan Koskamp

One piece take-away
Left arm straight down on downswing
Avoid casting
Driver: hips often too fast for arms, bring shoulders and arms through more in sync

Personal take-away from video: too upright, bend more in hips, back straight, head up.

Holzhäusern 5.4.2009

First round of the season at the Migros Course in Holzhäusern, 9 holes - I like this course, but the greens were absolutely terrible today, and they charged full fees, and did't even let on about the problem beforehand - I hate that kind of taking advantage of people. Anyway, the weather was very nice, but my swing is pretty rusty - I've lost a lot of distance over the winter period. Back to the driving range... Ah, and a final thought - be very careful on the 9th, there is a completely unprotected children's playground to the right off the tee, right in the way of your slice. I guess they wi

Golf Tour in South Africa - Cape Town and Garden Route Golf Courses

Just got back from a golf tour in South Africa, organized by Cape to Kruger Golf Tours. This was the best golf holiday I've had in a long time, Colin, our guide from Cape to Kruger Golf Tours was just great, and we all had a fantastic time - I thought for a while that I might win the tour tournament, but Larry just beat me in the end. We played Kingswood (long...), Bramble Hill (great course!), Devonvale (good warmup course to start things off, very friendly staff)and Mossel Bay (lovely views). Strongly recommended, excellent value for money.

Change of swing

Played my first 18 holes for 2008 in Holzhäusern. Consiously used as little right hand as possible, which accomplished two things 1) Avoided strain and pain in right arm 2) Really helped to get that sweeping feeling back into the swing. Much improved contact, even 2 perfect 3-wood shots. Good distance, bit less han normal but not much, straighter but not always yet. Will try and rebuild me swing around this principle.
Other thing to try: left hand hitting only.

2008 Swing Thoughts

To improve rotation and avoid injury to right arm, keep right elbow down and in (head cover under arm). Keep right hand very light on the grip to avoid impact strain.

Lee Valley

During my stay in Ireland this summer, I played the Lee Valley Golf and Country Club, not far from Cork, just follow the road to Macroom and you will see the signs after about 20 minutes. Arrive early during the week, and the course will be very quiet, and you'll get the early bird discount before 10:00 at EUR 35, which is well worth it. Very friendly staff, nice clubhouse, great course, thoroughly enjoyable.
